It’s Not What It Seems

Honolulu-based artists Kristen Baucom (Okbet!) and Ashley Wells (Miryo studio) showcased their collaboration this Friday at Kaiao Space.

The opening reception ran from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and featured refreshments provided by Kaimuki Storeroom.

The exhibit featured intrinsic pieces such as a circle of over one thousand cloth-covered buttons, each individually dyed and hand sewn and a hanging silk spiderweb - dyed with pink hibiscus - featuring a hanging ceramic spider.

The idea for the collaboration between friends and artists began with the concept of ceramic lamps and silk-dyed lampshades.

“I can’t say exactly how long each lamp took to make, I began in November of 2022. Two cracked in the process, so it was very ongoing,” said Wells.

Other highlights of the exhibit included a ceramic chair with small ties atop a large puffy woven rug and a small ceramic ashtray filled with crumpled ceramic cigarettes and chocolates.

The exhibit is currently on display and open to the public, and the artist talk will be held on the 12th of April.
